Summer Vacation: Day 1
Sam had his last day of school today but Alex had his first day off, so I am declaring this the first official day of Summer Vacation. Wahoo! I am so ready for a break from constant carpooling, homework, making school lunches, rushing around with nearly non-stop days. My wish for my kids (and myself!) is to have an old fashioned, old school, low key, lazy, fun, relaxed SUMMER.
We started the day off with french toast and strawberries. The boys loved it. Sam calling it FRUNCH TOAST. I shuttled Sam off to school while Alex played with his Jenga Blocks making a fortress for all his Star Wars Mini Figs. Since Michael worked from home, I was able to take my favorite Yoga Class. I came home to find Alex listening to Star Wars on CD with headphones. He got this set for his birthday and loves it. As long as he is not staring at a television or a computer, I am OK with it. Since he loves to listen to the radio, we thought he might enjoy the set, and by the way he sits intently on the couch and gets a faraway look in his eyes when he hears it, I deem it acceptable. He had lunch and we went to pick up Sam at school.
Since Sam is 4, he really does not understand the concept of Summer Vacation, but I keep telling him he is going to have a little break from school even though he will still go sometimes, just not as much (this is mainly for me I will honestly admit). He is still trying to grasp that he is moving up another level on the social ladder at school: he started out at 2 1/2 as a chickadee, this year a blue bird, and after his little graduation ceremony tomorrow night, he moves on to the highest level at his preschool: bluebird. He kind of gets it, but mostly what he wants is to stand at the top of the tiers (where the big kids stand) for the graduation ceremony ….one more year I tell him. I imagine he tires of hearing he has to wait for almost everything. On the way home, I offered a special treat of ice cream. The kids literally screamed for ice cream! Lucky for them, this not just any ordinary ice cream- this may be the best ice cream ever made – truly delicious- from the Fairfax Scoop.
Sam chose chocolate on a waffle cone.
Alex had raspberry sorbet in a waffle cup. We headed home after the obligatory stop at Fairfax Variety and the movie store for Friday night movies. Ever watch Tom and Jerry in Chinese? It happens to be just what is keeping them quiet while I write this. Anyway, I thought they might enjoy running through the sprinklers, so I offered that for my next old time activity. They both said yeah! in unison so I guess this still has appeal. So happy about that- dreading the day when it does not cut it anymore.
Froliking, running, shrieking, and giggles ensued and I considered it a success. At one point, it actually started to sprinkle a little! We were all pleasantly surprised. It does not rain here in June…. but since we are breaking with routine, it seemed appropriate.
I finished off my afternoon with a pedicure! Happy kids, yoga and foot grooming! What else could a mom want? I hesitate to wish for more…. I should stop there, but what I really do want is: A MARGARITA!
